FETTES COLLEGE IS A UNIQUE AND INSPIRING LOCATION, SITUATED JUST ONE MILE FROM THE HISTORIC AND CULTURAL CENTRE OF EDINBURGH
Founded in 1870, Fettes College is the legacy of Sir William Fettes who, after the death of his son in 1815, devoted his wealth to building a school for children.
The College itself is a magnificent building set in 100 acres of private parkland and is only 20 minutes away from Edinburgh International Airport and 10 minutes from Waverley train station.
Within the school grounds there is a range of excellent facilities including tennis and basketball courts, a large indoor sports hall and extensive playing fields for outdoor sports and activities.

PROGRAMME FOR ADULT LEARNERSOUR SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAMME HELPS STUDENTS BUILD THE CONFIDENCE TO USE AND IMPROVE THEIR ENGLISH BOTH IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM
At Fettes Centre for Language and Culture (FCLC) we are proud to launch our new Adult Learner Programme for 2010.
Our aim is to provide a unique and rewarding intensive 2 week course that takes into account the individual needs of each learner. The course integrates practical sessions, group work, role play, problem solving, presentations and discussions as methods for learning.
Cultural activities out with the classroom are designed to promote greater language fluency and comprehension in a native setting.
Students have the chance to experience Scotland and learn English within the safety and comfort of a well-organised and properly supervised programme.

EDINBURGH AND SCOTLAND
STEEPED IN HISTORY AND RICH IN CULTURE, EDINBURGH PROVIDES THE PERFECT LOCATION FOR A LANGUAGE SCHOOL
This capital city boasts a wealth of visitor attractions both traditional and modern, from castles to art galleries and museums to historic monuments. The city of Edinburgh is a gateway to the stunning countryside, beautiful mountains, lochs and glens for which Scotland is renowned.
Edinburgh Castle - Dating back to the 12th Century and housing the Scottish crown jewels, this famous castle stands on an extinct volcano. It dominates the centre of Edinburgh to create one of the most impressive cityscapes in the world.
The Royal Mile - The Royal Mile is Edinburgh's oldest street and runs from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. There are many places to visit on the Royal Mile such as St Giles' Cathedral, The Witches' Well, Parliament Square, Mary King's Close, John Knox's House and Camera Obscura.
Holyrood Palace - Founded in 1128, the palace of Holyroodhouse is closely associated with Scotland's historical and turbulent past. Various kings and queens have made this palace their official home in Scotland, from Mary, Queen of Scots to Britain's current Queen Elizabeth I I .
St Andrews - This fascinating and historic town played a major role in the religious life of Scotland's mediaeval past, with a cathedral dating back to 1160. St Andrews is also renowned for its golf courses and, in particular, the Old Course which is the most famous golf course in the world.
Loch Lomond - Loch Lomond is the largest lake in Great Britain and is at the centre of the Trossachs National Park. Loch Lomond was formed during the Ice Age by the action of glaciers and is situated beside the highest mountain in the area, Ben Lomond.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC PROGRAMME THE EMPHASIS IS ON ACTIVATING LANGUAGE AS WELL AS HELPING STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR FLUENCY THROUGH VARIED ACTIVITIES THAT MAKE LEARNING BOTH INTERESTING AND FUN!
20 hours of teaching per week
Course Overview
15 students maximum per class
Day one placement and oral test
Multi nationality classes (where possible)
Qualified teachers
State of the art facilities (smart boards and computer access)
All course material provided
Detailed progress report and certificate of attendance
Daily newspapers and periodicals for self study
Lessons take place every morning from Monday to Friday. The course begins with a placement test on day one. This enables the teaching team to place students in the most appropriate level of class. We do our best to create a positive learning environment and encourage communication in English by mixing the nationalities in each class. Teachers follow a student-centered, communicative approach to English language teaching and learning. Whilst classes cover all main skills, (speaking, listening, reading and writing), the emphasis is on communication. Students are asked to keep a record of their learning experience here in Scotland in the form of a diary or project. All necessary materials are provided for use throughout the course. -
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
LEARNING CONTINUES OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM AS STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES.
Students have many chances in the afternoons and at the weekends to learn about Scotland's rich cultural background. Whilst we do not provide a scheduled cultural programme we will give you a list of recommended attractions and shows that offer an excellent view of Scotland, her history and the world famous Edinburgh International Festival.

ADULT LEARNER SAMPLE DAILY PROGRAMME
7.45 - 8.15 - Breakfast8.30 -10.30 - Class
Continental breakfast is provided in the dining hall.
Oral feedback, reports or presentations are made to the class on the previous day’s afternoon and evening activities. New topics and lexis are introduced through authentic materials (written, audio or visual) or well-known course books designed for short courses. Pronunciation of new vocabulary is highlighted during this part of the morning. Controlled oral practice takes place to further accuracy. Activities may take place in pairs, groups or as a whole class; whichever is most appropriate at any given time and students are encouraged to take an active part in the lessons to maximise learning potential.10.30 -11.00 - Break
An opportunity to practice new vocabulary through talking to other students over a cup of tea or coffee (in English, of course!)
11.00 -13.00 - Class
New topics and lexis may be further reinforced and developed through role plays, discussions or problem-solving activities amongst others. Group project work either in class or in the computer room may be prepared which can include research into afternoon visits to local attractions or to prepare surveys for fellow students and teachers. Time may also be spent on student diaries which can enable the teacher to give individual attention on particular areas for further development for each student. This may involve online exercises or activities or individual research for students to conduct in their own time.
13.00 -13.30 - Back to Craigleith House
This will give the Adult Learners an opportunity to freshen up and relax before dinner.
13.30 - Lunch
3 course lunch is provided in the dining hall.
2.00 - Cultural activities & excursion
Adult Learners are encouraged to visit and take part in cultural activities in Edinburgh and its surroundings.
19.00 - Dinner
3 course dinner is provided in the dining hall.
19.30 - Cultural activities & excursion
Adult Learners are encouraged to visit and take part in cultural activities in Edinburgh and its surroundings.

ACCOMMODATION
CRAIGLEITH HOUSE AT FETTES COLLEGE OPENED ITS DOORS IN SEPTEMBER 2007 AND OFFERS QUALITY ACCOMMODATION WITHIN THE 100 ACRE GROUNDS OF FETTES COLLEGE.
Fettes Centre for Language & Culture is delighted to be able to offer Craigleith House as part of the Adult Learner Programme package. Each room comes complete with a study desk, wardrobe, bedside cabinet and en-suite shower and toilet facilities.
Craigleith House facilities include:

GRADUATION
On successful completion of the Summer Intensive Programme, students receive a Certificate of Studies and a Progress Report prepared by their teacher.
These are presented at the Graduation Ceremony which is normally held in the spectacular surroundings of the Fettes College Chapel within the main school building.
