Founded in 1870, Fettes College is the legacy of Sir William Fettes who, after the death of his son in 1815, devoted his wealth to building a school for children.
The College itself is a magnificent building set in 100 acres of private parkland and is only 20 minutes away from Edinburgh International Airport and 10 minutes from Waverley train station.
Within the school grounds there is a range of excellent facilities including tennis and basketball courts, a large indoor sports hall and extensive playing fields for outdoor sports and activities.
At Fettes Centre for Language and Culture (FCLC) we offer two intensive summer programmes. Our Young Learner programme is designed for children aged from 10 to 13 years old and our Young Student programme is for those aged 14 to 17 years old.
Morning English classes are combined with an action-packed selection of cultural, social and sports activities and excursions in the afternoons, evenings and at weekends.
Students have the chance to experience Scotland and learn English within the safety and comfort of a well-organised and properly supervised programme.
This capital city boasts a wealth of visitor attractions both traditional and modern, from castles to art galleries and museums to historic monuments. The city of Edinburgh is a gateway to the stunning countryside, beautiful mountains, lochs and glens for which Scotland is renowned.
Edinburgh Castle - Dating back to the 12th Century and housing the Scottish crown jewels, this famous castle stands on an extinct volcano. It dominates the centre of Edinburgh to create one of the most impressive cityscapes in the world.
The Royal Mile - The Royal Mile is Edinburgh's oldest street and runs from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. There are many places to visit on the Royal Mile such as St Giles' Cathedral, The Witches' Well, Parliament Square, Mary King's Close, John Knox's House and Camera Obscura.
Holyrood Palace - Founded in 1128, the palace of Holyroodhouse is closely associated with Scotland's historical and turbulent past. Various kings and queens have made this palace their official home in Scotland, from Mary, Queen of Scots to Britain's current Queen Elizabeth I I .
St Andrews - This fascinating and historic town played a major role in the religious life of Scotland's mediaeval past, with a cathedral dating back to 1160. St Andrews is also renowned for its golf courses and, in particular, the Old Course which is the most famous golf course in the world.
Loch Lomond - Loch Lomond is the largest lake in Great Britain and is at the centre of the Trossachs National Park. Loch Lomond was formed during the Ice Age by the action of glaciers and is situated beside the highest mountain in the area, Ben Lomond.
Course Overview
» 20 lessons per week (15 hours)
» 15 students per class (maximum)
» Levels: elementary to advanced
Lessons take place every morning from Monday to Friday. The course begins with a placement test on Day One. This enables the teaching team to place students in the most appropriate level of class. We do our best to create a positive learning environment and encourage communication in English by mixing the nationalities in each class. Teachers follow a student-centered, communicative approach to English language teaching and learning. Whilst classes cover all main skills, (speaking, listening, reading and writing), the emphasis is on communication. A link to the Cultural Programme allows students to get to know some of the places they will visit on their activities and excursions. Students are asked to keep a diary of their learning experience here in Scotland. Homework is also an important part of our programme and students are given time to complete this before dinner. All necessary materials are provided for use throughout the course.
The Cultural Programme offers visits to famous attractions such as Edinburgh Castle, the Wallace Monument (of Braveheart fame!) and to Highland Games. There are opportunities to enjoy the beautiful Scottish countryside while visiting such places as Loch Lomond and The Trossachs.
Students have many chances to learn about Scotland's rich cultural background through events like our Scottish traditional music and dance evenings. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor or indoor sports and of course, the weekly discos are always popular!
Traditional boarding school environment
Students stay in the traditional boarding houses located within the grounds of Fettes College. Each house is small and comfortable, accommodating around 50 students plus staff who provide 24 hour supervision. Students stay in a mixture of single, twin and multi-bedded rooms. Bathroom, shower and toilet facilities are shared.
Other types of accommodation may also be arranged. Please enquire for details.
Meals are served in the bright, spacious dining hall. A good choice of hot food, fresh fruit and salad is served every day.
Pastoral Care
Looking after the students in our care is our number one priority. By providing a carefully planned, well-organised and properly supervised programme we do our utmost to promote students' safety and welfare at all times. A dedicated team of managers and staff is responsible for supervising students throughout the day, during all activities, excursions and at night in the boarding houses.

On successful completion of the Summer Intensive Programme, students receive a Certificate of Studies and a Progress Report prepared by their teacher.
These are presented at the Graduation Ceremony which is normally held in the spectacular surroundings of the Fettes College Chapel within the main school building.
